Medieval art and architecture is so awesome because it illustrates many of the battling powers of the Middle Ages. In Medieval Tuscany Siena and Florence were fierce rivals. From towers to fortresses to city walls, it seems as though every archiectural element of these powers was geared at protecting the city from its enemy. One of my

favorite examples of this protection is on display outside the Loggia della Mercanzia in the center of Siena. On the columns of this popular Medieval structure are four saints: Saint Peter and Paul, San Savino, Sant’Ansano, and San Vittore, all acting as the protectors of Siena. Now here is the interesting part, notice their heads. Each statue is facing Florence as if they are keeping a look out for the approaching enemy. NOW THAT IS REALLY COOL. Every detail is intentional, designed to protect the walls and warn the citizens. Sure, a trip to Siena way seem like a nice stroll and a few great views. But when you know the idiosyncrasies of Siena's special details, you will uncover a whole new world, the true Medieval world.
